A Personal Path to Non-Toxic Living
Throughout 2024, I began to make small steps to curating a wellness-based lifestyle for myself and prioritizing a non-toxic routine.
Two years ago, I found myself in a deeply challenging chapter of my life—caught in a cycle of alcoholism and binge-eating that slowly eroded my sense of self. Most days were spent masking my struggles, battling exhaustion while trying to meet the demands of everyday responsibilities. It was a silent chaos, one that chipped away at my physical health, emotional stability, and confidence. By the end of 2023, I reached a pivotal turning point. I made the life-changing decision to remove alcohol from my life entirely. That moment marked more than just sobriety—it was the first bold step toward reclaiming my identity and placing my well-being at the center of my choices once again.
Fast forward to now, I am in a much healthier and happier place. Making the hard decision to let go of the things that no longer served me—especially alcohol—has brought me to where I am now. Sobriety can feel isolating at times, but the clarity and peace I’ve gained far outweigh that loneliness. Not once have I regretted choosing not to drink the night before. That lingering feeling of 'hang-xiety' is no longer a part of my mornings, and in its place is a sense of freedom. I finally feel able to express myself fully and live in alignment with who I truly am.
While I do not believe it is required to give up substances to live a better life - it has been what has worked for me.
These days, I feel completely at ease going to parties or bars without the pressure to drink. Still, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss the buzz of sharing a shot with friends or lingering over a few glasses of wine at dinner. Luckily, with non-alcoholic drinks becoming more mainstream, I can still be part of the celebration and the connection—just without the hangover.
Here’s a look at some of the key changes I’ve made to live a more non-toxic lifestyle—covering my daily routines, mindset, and the products I choose:
EATING: I’ve almost completely cut out fast food and now prioritize organic, whole foods. I’ve also removed seed oils from my diet and focused on gut health by incorporating kefir, kombucha, and pre/post-probiotics.
PERSONAL CARE: I’ve overhauled my hygiene and beauty routine by switching to non-toxic alternatives and simplifying everything. These days, I stick to organic, multi-use products that actually nourish my skin and hair—without all the extra additives. It hasn’t always been easy, especially with TikTok and Instagram constantly pushing the latest must-have products, but learning to tune out the noise and focus on what truly works for me has been so worth it.
HOUSEHOLD & LIFESTYLE: If you know me, you know I’m all about homemaking. When it comes to cleaning, I stick to fragrance-free or essential oil-based products. And for the past 10+ years, I’ve been making my own candles! I love reusing jars and leftover wax—it’s a fun, sustainable hobby, and homemade candles make the best gifts.
Nowadays, post-grad, I prioritize my health and inner peace. As I navigate my career path and approach my late twenties, I try not to overwhelm myself and take each day as it comes. I’ve learned that creating and appreciating art, exploring new things and experiences, and cherishing my connections are my top priorities.
Be well,
Emily
